A silver color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in width overall consisting of two diagonally crossed and voided blue rectangles interlacing a white four bastioned fort on a scarlet background and all within a narrow scarlet border above a semi-circular silver scroll, the ends terminating midway at the sides of the devices inscribed PROFICIENCY WITH SPIRIT in scarlet letters.
Scarlet and white are the colors used for the Corps of Engineers. The four bastioned fort alludes to the planning and coordination of the combat and construction support mission of the organization. The simulated blue saltire is taken from the civic arms of the City of Richmond, Virginia, home station of the 176th Engineer Group.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 21 October 1971.
